10,700′ elevation sure is the perfect place to get married, so that’s precisely what Lizzy and Josh did for their Winter Park Resort Colorado Wedding at The Lodge at Sunspot. These two wonderful human beings actually don’t live in Colorado so this was a destination wedding for them as well as the massive amount of family and friends that came to celebrate with them and surround them with so much love and support! Both the bride and groom live in Florida, but Colorado held a special place in their hearts. It was incredibly touching how many people flew and drove so far to be with Lizzy and Josh. It was also incredibly touching how the couple made so many people a part of both the ceremony and reception. During the ceremony, their best friend and cousin played string instruments during the processional. They also had multiple people speak, both friends and family, with touching quotes as well as advice for the newlyweds to have a happy and successful marriage. Their officiant, Mike, is the bride’s cousin. They even had live music for their first dance – played by a college friend and her mother on strings.
I think it goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyways) that getting in Colorado is a complete toss up as far as the weather goes. You have to be flexible, laid back and ready to roll with the punches. I’ve seen it snow in June and be 80º on a winter day, you just never know what you’re going to get. The late July day started off with some pretty perfect weather. However, shortly after their first look the clouds rolled in and brought lightning with. Those of you that are familiar with Colorado know that ski lifts are required to take a 30 minute break per lightning strike. Lizzy and Josh were so cool calm and collected about it and rode up to their venue on a back rode in a giant bus with a bunch of their guests. Shortly after arriving at the top of the mountain we got word that it had been just over 30 minutes with no lightning, so we booked it to the ski lift and decided to ride down and then back up to get those epic ski lift photos that were a big part of why they chose this venue! The ride down was easy peasy, they even got to see more of their guests that were loading to go up the mountain! We took some more couple’s photos and headed back up. about 75% of the way to the ceremony spot the wind started whipping and the ski lift seats started rocking. I’m pretty sure (actually 100% sure) that I was way more terrified than the bride and groom. Sure enough, as soon as we made it to the top of the mountain they rushed us off and we ran inside immediately because the lighting was back again. Such a crazy rush and a fun story to look back on for the wedding day.
Weather and all the ceremony still happened outside with the gorgeous Colorado mountains as the backdrop on the deck at The Lodge at Sunspot. Afterward, the reception took place inside where some heart-felt toasts were given, tears were shed and then everyone danced the night away!
